The Lottery
Before discussing the following questions, ensure that you and your partner(s) agree on the details of the story. What is the lottery? Why do the townspeople do it every year?
1. How does this story explore the theme of conformity? Is the story symbolic? Is it telling us something about ourselves?
2. How do the commonplace details of life and folksy language of the characters contribute to the impact of the story?
3. Why have some other villages given up this practice? Why hasn’t this village done so?
4. What is the significance of Tessie’s final scream “It isn’t fair. It isn’t right!” What aspect of the lottery is she challenging?
