1.  Mike was in a car accident on his way to work.

3.  He has been studying French for 10 years.
    He is unable to communicate.
    He cannot formulate the most basic sentences.

In a Google Doc, write two or three paragraphs, between 100 and 200 words, summarizing the points argued by Farhad Manjoo and Joanne Saul in the Bookstore debate, then responding with your own opinion. Are bookstores essential or are they unnecessary and overrated?

You will hear a debate between two people, Farhad Manjoo, a writer for Slate Magazine, and Joanne Saul, a bookstore owner, on the topic of book stores.

Take notes while you listen and answer the questions below:

1.  Why are some people criticizing Amazon.com?

2.  What are some of Farhad Manjoo's criticisms of "brick and mortar" bookstores?

3.  Why does he think bookstores are unnecessary?  What, in his opinion, are the benefits of online bookstores like Amazon?

4.  How does Joanne Saul defend "brick and mortar" bookstores?  Give several benefits that she mentions in the debate.

5.  What is her point about the "serendipity" of bookstores?

6.  Whom do you agree with more?  Are bookstores relevant or unnecessary?
